Who Should've Played for the BSC Title? Ranking With Incomplete Information by William Edwards-Mizel '14

Mathematics and Statistics Department Colloquium

Abstract:  Every year 125 teams compete at the highest level of collegiate football. They play a 12-game regular season. When most teams don’t play most other teams, how should we rank to determine a championship game? For the last time, in 2013, a series of computer algorithms and polls were combined to produce a weekly ranking. Is there a better way? We will propose and analyze a naïve method with random walkers to rank with incomplete information.
