Traffic Flow

Thomas Vieth '13

Mathematics and Statistics Department Colloquium

Abstract:  In my colloquium I plan on building up the machinery necessary to model how traffic behaves when faced with a temporary shock such as an accident or a red light. First, I plan on deriving the velocity-density relationship that is at the heart of the model. Next, I will move into a discussion of the method of characteristics. FInally, I will begin to walk through the construction of the model, starting with a few basic examples and progressing to a more complete model of the system.
