Order Statistics and the German Tank ProblemChristopher Picardo '13
Mathematics and Statistics Department Colloquium

Abstract: Order statistics are fundamental to the study of non-parametric statistics. I will first introduce order statistics and then calculate the order statistics of the uniform distribution, noting the powerful result that the order statistics follow a Beta distribution. I will then use order statistics to introduce and evaluate the German Tank Problem: an historical applied problem from World War II that was instrumental in helping the Allies with the invasion of Normandy. Finally, I will explore the median theorem, an alternative to the Central Limit Theorem that can be applied even when the underlying distributions have no finite moments.
