Musical Actions of Dihedral GroupsWilliam Speer '13
Mathematics and Statistics Department Colloquium

Abstract: Since the mid-20th century, music theorists have modeled musical transposition and inversion as an action of the dihedral group of order 24. More recently, theorists have found a second way in which that group acts on the set of consonant triads: through the PLR-group. We will see how these actions are dual in a musical sense, and how they apply to what we hear in tonal music today.
