How to Draw a Straight Line:  Planar Linkages and Their Applications by Samuel Kurland

Mathematics and Statistics Department Colloquium

Abstract:  A planar linkage is a set of rods connected by fixed points about which they are free to turn. This can be as simple as a single rod and single point, whose range of motion is a circle, or as complex as a human arm, with extensive range of motion in 3 dimensions. My talk will focus on the problem which originally inspired and drove the study of planar linkages: can a system of rigid rods with circular range of motion be used to draw a straight line?
