Calculating Power in Multicameral Voting SystemsElise Baker '13
Mathematics and Statistics Department Colloquium

Abstract: There are a number of ways to calculate players’ “power” in voting systems, and they all provide different results. We can represent all monotonic voting systems as an intersection of weighted voting systems and calculate each player’s weight interval in the system. We will prove Taylor and Zwicker’s theorem on the President’s weight interval in the US Federal System and then compare this interval with the Shapley-Shubik and Banzhaf power indices for the President. Do they match?
